# Rune Essence

Rune essence can be gathered by mining rune essence stones surrounding the geysers around Ashenfall. Some spawn with rocks on the ground that you can easily gather from. The floating rocks require being hit (most easily with an arrow or an attack from a staff), and they will then fall to the ground to be mined. Alternatively, players can cast Rocksplosion whilst aiming at the floating rocks and can collect rune essence without affecting the pickaxe's durability. Collecting rune essence in their inventory for the first time unlocks the rune altar.
